I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona - where the light is so beautiful and the city... maybe not so much.

Graduate of Art Center College of Design.

I began my career as an editorial and album cover shooter and life was filled with lots of incredible subjects, clients and travel. My 1st album cover was for Etta James, followed by touring with a bunch of wonderful, crazy bands that are still around today. I was lucky enough to shoot assignments for Time, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, etc. back when you were either able to spend a lot of time with the subject and be spontaneous, allow your day to meander - or had to do an amazing cover shoot in 5 minutes. Either way, we were able to make it something of a collaboration between myself and the people being photographed. I'm thankful that I got to be a participant of that time in photography's ongoing evolution.

Having shot for many years for Smith & Hawken, I was asked by Target to shoot their line launch when the companies collaborated & enjoyed being able to continue with more of that type of work. I think it may have been one of my favorite campaigns, ever. I had previously photographed the Smith & Hawken/ Sandra Johnson Flower Calendar in conjunction with Workman Publishing for 10 years which was an amazing opportunity to work with friends & crew in the most gorgeous settings.

I have really enjoyed my somewhat unplanned transition into advertising and "Lifestyle" photography and have an amazing crew & glam squad who are like family to me. We all work hard, have fun, & appreciate new challenges. I wish that all of my clients could move to California so I'd see them more, but then I wouldn't get to travel as much.

I am based in San Francisco but also work locally out of Los Angeles.

Thank you for your interest in my work and I hope to hear from you.

Best,
Sandra
